Congress President Sonia Gandhi
As the world celebrates today the
International Women's Day, the Congress president, Sonia Gandhi made a strong
pitch for legal reserve of "long-awaited" Woman guarantees 33 percent
for women Parliament and state assemblies.
"Reserve law expected Woman
requires government attention," Sonia said in the Lok Sabha during a
special presentation to celebrate the March 8 "Congress is proud to have
been the first and only woman prime minister," she said , referring to
Indira Gandhi.
A bill of constitutional
amendment has a third reservation for women in state assemblies and the Lok
Sabha was passed by the Rajya Sabha in March 2010 before the protests of some
parts of the region and the collective support of the parts of the Congress,
BJP and left, still pending.
At a conference of
parliamentarians in Parliament on Monday, women, President Pranab Mukherjee
said it was "regrettable" that the bill has not yet been approved in
Lok Sabha.
Sonia also criticized
"minimum government, maximum governance" NDA government dictum - much
persecuted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi - as she tried to corner the
government over the recent controversies.
"Maximum Governance is
giving women is due them," she said, adding that it also meant ensuring
that civil and democratic rights of a citizen who are not denied.
Sonia said the idea of
"maximum governance" also includes "preserve the social and
community fabric" of the nation. "It's about expanding the scope of
debate without reprisals and revenge," she said.
