New Delhi: Technology giant Apple
has requested authorization from the government to import second-hand iPhones
for sale in India, Parliament was informed today. "An application of Apple
with respect to imports of iPhones used certified for sale in India and
manufacture of iPhones used certified for sale in India has been received at
the Ministry of Environment and Forests," said Minister of Ravi Shankar
Prasad Telecom in a written reply to Rajya Sabha.
Prasad was responding to a
question about whether any company has requested authorization for the
renovation and sale of used mobile phones in the country. The minister also
said the government has not taken any decision. Apple is putting more energy in
India to cash in the smartphone market booming in the country.
The company based in California,
which saw total sales iPhone grow by 76 percent in the country, had previously
said it will continue to invest in markets like India in the long run.
Recently, Apple has also sent a request for authorization from the Department
of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) for the creation of outlets in India.
India is one of the mobile phone market fastest growing in the world and is
about to overtake the US soon.
